Founded in 1989 by Yahya EL BECHIR, our chartered accountancy firm brings together professionals from the largest national companies, building over the decades a reputation for excellence unique in Mauritania.

Over 35 years at the heart of Mauritania

1989

Founding of the firm

BECHIR & CO is founded in Nouakchott by Yahya EL BECHIR — marking the birth of an independent chartered accountancy firm in Mauritania.

1990 – 1998

PricewaterhouseCoopers representation

The firm represents the international PwC network in Mauritania and contributes to the design of sectoral accounting frameworks for mining and banking.

1990 – 1994

Banking sector reform

In partnership with PwC, support to the restructuring: liquidation of FND and UBD, privatisation of SMB (later BNM) and liquidation of BIMA.

1992

Public-sector accounting framework

Development of the first standard accounting framework for Mauritanian public entities — still the national reference for public accounting today.

2003 – 2004

Decentralisation policy

Support to the decentralisation policy during the first municipal elections — across all dimensions: organisation, municipal finance and institutional support.

2008

Simplified petroleum tax regime

Drafting of the first simplified tax regime for the Mauritanian petroleum sector, with the participation of WOODSIDE.

2010

SOCOGIM × ANAT merger → ISKAN

Support to the largest M&A transaction in Mauritanian history: SOCOGIM and ANAT merge to form ISKAN, the national real-estate company.

2024 – 2026

Corruption risk mapping

Development of a corruption risk mapping for the ARMP, the Ministry of Equipment and Transport and the Ministry of Housing and Land Planning — internal audit, procedures manual and team training.
